This week’s "Leading Lady" is Molly Burke, General Counsel of GE Energy Services
Intelligent, inspirational, and insightful are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think of Molly Burke. I’ve been fortunate to speak to the General Counsel of GE Energy Services about leadership on several occasions and I am pleased to some of our most recent conversation.
KMR: Molly,in three words, what are the most important values that a good leader should possess?
MB: Integrity, creativity, inclusiveness.
KMR: What traits in a leader do you feel are essential for building a strong team?
MB: Leaders need to be able to develop and articulate a vision and energize and empower members of the team to achieve it. This takes creativity, articulateness, patience, flexibility and energy among other traits.
KMR: Throughout your career what woman leader has inspired you? And why?
|
MB: There have been so many great women leaders throughout history that it is hard to choose. Indeed it is noteworthy that very few women leaders have been evil or corrupt. I've always been inspired by Queen Elizabeth I, who assumed the throne during a very tumultuous time and ruled with strength and conviction for many years thus stabilizing her country and enabling it to prosper and acquire global significance - her rule is still referred to as the Golden Age for England.
Since June 1999, Ms. Burke has been the General Counsel for GE Energy Services in Atlanta. From 1995-1999 she was Counsel, Litigation and Legal Policy at GE Corporate Headquarters.
Ms. Burke is a member of the Boards of Directors of the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta and Hands On Atlanta.
Prior to joining General Electric Company in July, 1995, Ms. Burke was a litigation partner in the Seattle office of Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe where she specialized in large commercial litigation. Ms. Burke was appointed to the Civil Justice Reform Act Panel for the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. She was very active in firm and bar association pro bono activities.
Ms. Burke graduated from Smith College, magna cum laude in 1976 and from Harvard Law School cum laude in 1982. From 1976-79 she studied at St. Anne’s College, Oxford on a Fulbright-Hayes Scholarship. She is admitted to the bar in the States of Georgia, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Washington as well as the bar for the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Have a great week!
